Welcome to Fifty Crates of Crafts, Appledore!
Opened in October 2024, Fifty Crates of Crafts is nestled in Appledore’s oldest building, a charming structure dating back to 1604 that once served as the old Custom House. Our fifty wooden crates, carefully arranged throughout the space, add to the building’s historic ambience, creating a unique setting where tradition meets creativity.
We offer artists and crafters the opportunity to rent space to showcase and sell their work in a welcoming, professional environment. All sales are managed through our state-of-the-art retail system, ensuring smooth transactions for both sellers and customers.
Crafters are required to work a minimum of one day per month in the shop On your working days, you’re welcome to bring in additional items to sell alongside your crate display. Our flexible rota often pairs makers together, encouraging a friendly, collaborative atmosphere and the chance to connect with fellow creatives.
Those working in the shop enjoy access to shared facilities, including a kitchen, free tea and coffee, and toilet facilities. We also provide dedicated workspace within the shop, allowing you to work on your craft while on site.

rent a crate
We offer a range of sizes to suit different types of creations, from shallow to spacious crates and glass shelving for jewellery.
You can rent your crate space for a minimum of three months or sign up to extended rental terms of six or twelve months.
work in the shop
Spend a day or more working in our shop and receive a crate rental discount plus the opportunity to bring in additional creations on each day you work.
We simply ask you to help promote your "shop days" across your social media.
low commissions
We charge a flat commission rate of 15% on every sale to cover the cost of any packaging needed, shop bags, admin time and card transaction fees.
These fees are confirmed and deducted from your monthly sales statement and payment.

Working in the Fifty Crates of Crafts shop is more than just a commitment to cover a shift, it’s a genuine part of being in a supportive creative collective. With a minimum of 1 shop day and up to 3 days, makers become active members of the community, spending time alongside fellow North Devon crafters in a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment. It’s a chance to build real connections, share ideas, and make new friends who understand the creative journey. Many makers find these shop days become a highlight of their week, with plenty of conversation, encouragement, and collaboration, all while enjoying free tea and coffee in a relaxed, friendly space where creativity is always at the centre.

Suitable for most crafts and can accommodate small branded displays.

We offer convenient and affordable payment plans for our art, craft and jewellery crates to make it easier for customers to enjoy our unique creations. Our payment plans are available for minimum terms of 3, 6, or 12 months, providing flexibility to suit your budget and preferences. what happens next?
Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email detailing the information provided. Your application will then be sent to the North Devon Handmade Collective curation team for review. You will hear back within 14 days.
