This new space will bring our much-loved creative retail concept to North Devon's "Capital", placing local makers and artists right at the heart of Barnstaple’s shopping scene.
The Barnstaple shop will feature crate stacks only, each made up of three traditional apple crates (79cm x 46cm), topped with a 300mm-wide living-edge wooden surface for a distinctive, natural finish. Each crate can be fitted with a mid-level shelf where required, offering flexible and practical display options for your work.
We invite artists and crafters to apply NOW to rent a crate stack, showcasing and selling their creations in a warm, professional retail environment. All sales will be handled through our state-of-the-art retail system, ensuring smooth transactions for both makers and customers.
Crafters are required to work a minimum of one day per month, with the option to work up to sixteen days per month. On your working days, you’re welcome to bring in additional stock to sell alongside your crate display. Our flexible rota encourages makers to work together, fostering a friendly, collaborative atmosphere and genuine creative connections. Those working in the shop will enjoy access to shared facilities, including a kitchen, free tea and coffee, toilet facilities, and dedicated workspace, allowing you to work on your craft while on site. We offer flexible 3, 6, and 12-month contracts. As an added benefit, makers who choose a 12-month contract and work four days per month will pay no rent at all. A 20% commission is payable on all sales.
With interest already building, we encourage makers to apply early and get in the queue. Spaces are limited, and crate stacks are allocated on a first-come, first-considered basis. Whether you’re looking to grow your business, reach new customers, or become part of North Devon’s creative community, Fifty Crates of Crafts – Barnstaple offers a unique opportunity to combine craftsmanship, collaboration and a fantastic retail presence.

rent a crate stack
We offer a standard three crate stack, with each apple crate providing generous display space and the option of internal shelving as needed. A distinctive living-edge wooden top sits above the lowest crate, creating an eye-catching surface ideal for feature pieces.
You can rent your crate space for a minimum of three months or sign up to extended rental terms of six or twelve months.
work in the shop
All crafters are required to work a minimum of one day per month in the shop, with the option to work up to four days per month. Each shop day worked reduces your monthly crate stack rental fee, and on every day you work you’re welcome to bring in additional items to sell alongside your display.
A limited number of spaces are available for crafters committing to a 12-month contract and four shop days per month, for which no crate stack rental fee is payable.
fixed commissions
We charge a simple, flat 20% commission on all sales, designed to keep things clear and predictable for our makers.
This contribution helps cover the essential costs of running a professional retail space on your behalf, including card transaction fees, administration, packaging, shop bags, utilities, point-of-sale systems and day-to-day shop management.
The commission deducted from your monthly sales statement.
